Methods and Benefits of Radiofrequency and Laser Treatments in Pittsburgh
Laser treatments, such as laser hair removal and laser skin tightening treatments, are wildly popular among people of all ages. In a similar vein, radiofrequency treatments, often used to tighten and resurface the skin, are also highly sought-after treatments. However, many people mistakenly think these two types of treatments fall under the same umbrella, when in fact, they’re quite different.
Regardless of which treatment methodology you choose, it’s important to understand what each one is best used for and how each one works, as that will ultimately impact the results you see. While treatments that target areas of the face are the most common, some devices in both categories are capable of treating other areas, such as the backs of the hands, neck, or décolletage. These treatments are safe and effective and, in many cases, require little to no downtime post-procedure.
From uneven skin tone and problematic skin texture to unwanted body hair, these powerful treatments may be just what you need. Cosmetic Laser CentersSM offer several options for radiofrequency and laser treatments to address a variety of aesthetic complaints. Learn more about the pros and cons of each.
Radiofrequency: Healthy Cell Growth & Skin Resurfacing Treatments
Radiofrequency technology is an electricity-based treatment that travels through the surface of the skin into the deeper, dermal layer. The resistance of the skin as the energy travels through it prompts both a tightening of the existing cells, as well as the stimulation of new collagen fibers.
One example of this is Thermage®, a service Cosmetic Laser CentersSM is proud to offer.
Thermage® is a clinically proven, non-invasive skin-tightening radiofrequency procedure that stimulates new collagen production to achieve a more toned appearance with no downtime necessary. This treatment is suitable for the face as well as the body, and patients typically only need one treatment to see improvement in tone and tightness. It is common for many patients to repeat Thermage® annually to maintain and advance results.
Radiofrequency pros and cons
Pros:
- Non-invasive
- Visible results in as little as one treatment
- Minimal discomfort
- The length of treatment is short
- Radiofrequency is safe for patients with more melanin-rich skin
Cons:
- May require multiple sessions for dramatic results
- Not suitable for Rosacea
- Working with an inexperienced provider may lead to negative results
Laser Therapy: Skin Tightening, Collagen Production & Hair Removal Treatments in Pittsburgh
Unlike radiotherapy treatments, laser treatment devices utilize light as an energy source to change the skin and hair follicles. These energy-based devices use concentrated light frequencies to target specific concerns; in some cases, it’s meant to promote regenerative abilities, while in other instances it’s to impede regrowth of unwanted body hair. Here at Cosmetic Laser CentersSM, we proudly offer two Fraxel® lasers (Fraxel® DUAL and Fraxel re:pair® SST) to improve skin tone and texture, and LightSheer™ for IPL laser hair removal. In addition, we also offer CLEARLight™ acne treatments at both of our locations.
Fraxel® lasers
Fraxel® lasers are designed to target aging and damaged skin by producing thousands of deep, microscopic treatment zones (MTZs). For every zone of skin actively treated, the surrounding areas of skin are left untouched. By doing so, the treatment is much more tolerable than traditional non-fractional (full-field) laser treatments and allows for a faster recovery.
Fraxel® DUAL and Fraxel re:pair® SST do vary slightly in the number of treatments required to achieve results.
According to Fraxel® DUAL clinical studies and suggestions from the manufacturer, an effective treatment regime is four to six treatments, spaced approximately four to six weeks apart. Meanwhile, most Fraxel re:pair® SST patients find that one treatment provides desirable results. However, some patients repeat the treatment in eight to twelve months.
Every patient is unique and their experience may differ.
LightSheer™ lasers
The LightSheer™ device’s diode laser removes unwanted hair by targeting the melanin in the hair and zapping it with a pulse of energy that is intended to destroy the hair follicle. Once a hair follicle is destroyed, the growth of new hair is hindered.
Due to hair growth cycles, several treatments are typically needed to accomplish up to 80% permanent hair reduction. The number of treatment sessions depends entirely on the individual and his or her response to treatment. Some mild discomfort is to be expected during LightSheer™ treatments, but there’s no residual pain and downtime is not necessary.
Given the nature of laser hair removal, some patients with lighter hair may not make good candidates. As with most treatments, it’s best to schedule a consultation with an experienced professional to find out if this treatment is the best option for you. LightSheer™ is non-invasive and can be used on practically any area of the body. Common treatment areas include underarms, bikini area, back, face, and chest.
Laser treatment pros and cons
Pros:
- Non-invasive
- More gentle benefits of non-ablative lasers
- Downtime is minimal, generally less than one week
- Some benefits are seen immediately
- Removes old, damaged skin cells to reveal a more youthful appearance
Cons:
- Is not meant for use on the undereye area
- Depending on melanin levels in the skin and hair, options may be limited
- Some benefits require multiple sessions
